Jointer Knives

I am in need of sharper jointer knives.

I have a Delta 37-196 6" jointer, and the knives are in need of sharpening. I would really like to have two sets of knives on hand (one mounted and one stand by). The price of Delta knives is breath taking ($70+ for HSS). The knives are 6 1/8" x 5/8"x 3/32".

I have an old set of HSS knives, that are the correct length and width(from a previous jointer), but they are 1/8" thick. Would there be a problem with these?

On the other hand I can get Amana knives, of the correct dimension for about $25 + shipping.

Many places that sell jointer knives will have a set of exactly the same size...often for about the price of sharpening. Hartville Tool has good quality and service, and Amazon carries a good selection.

I just bought a set of knives from CHARLES G.G. SCHMIDT & Co.,Inc. This company came recommended by some of the forum's members. Around $30 and I recieved them in 2 days!

Another vote for Globaltooling. There made from T-1 which holds an edge much better the the stock knives made from M-2. I Had a Delta 37-190. the open stand version of yours. Think there obout 19.00 from global.

Add another vote for Global Tooling. Very good knives for less than it would cost me to get mine sharpened.

back when I had a jointer with conventional knives, the "new replacement" knives arrived in need of sharpening. Don't assume that if you get new knives they are ready to use.... maybe if you are lucky, but not certain. For planning, assume the cost of sharpening in the purchase price.
