Black Marble Trivet

I had a customer ask a question about using black marble as a trivet. I showed her a piece that I had engraved with a photo and she asked me if that could be used as a trivet.
Would the heat from a pot or dish affect the marble in any way? I have a few scrap pieces that I was thinking of using but wanted to know people though here

Black marble is a soft stone material and would be fine as a trivet as far as heat resistance. The problem I see is that the high polished surface is very easy to scratch.
