Figuring figure

When buying figured woods that are roughsawn, how can you get a good idea of the figure that is present?

I would think most lumber yards would not mind if you brought along a block plane to smooth out a small section to check the figure.

When I am shopping for figured wood I usualy take along a block plane. Most places that sell hardwood don't mind your taking a few passes with one.

I thought about that but wasn't sure if that would be kosher. I'll ask, they seem to be really low key and have great prices compared to local.

besides the block plane, David Marks takes a small spray bottle of water. The figure stands out more when wet, like it will with a finish.
