Where to Buy Double Sided Hardboard

I have a simple question, where can I buy hardboard that is smooth on both sides, and in different thicknesses? I have tried the local big boxes, but I have only ever seen 1/4" thickness that is smooth on a one side.

No help here, sorry. I was looking for the same thing a few weeks back to use in making my blast gates. No luck finding a the box stores here either. I didn't try any of the full service lumber yards, I was able to use 1/4" MDF for what I needed. Good luck in your search. I'll watch to see if anyone has a source for you. Jim.

Sign makers use a lot of the 1/2" hardboard.
Maybe check with one for a source.

I found 1/8" smooth on both sides, at big blue in Columbia.

I found some at a local lumberyard. In fact 2 local yards has it.

If you are referring to service tempered hardboard (which I think you are) I found it at the lumber yard, never at the BORGs. 1/8 is more common but 1/4 is sometimes available but, can always be ordered where I shop. Hopefully you have a yard that can do the same. You could also do a search for distributers via Masonite's web page. Good luck.

There are two types of hardboard, tempered and regular. Tempered is the darker of the two. It can be either smooth both sides, or smooth on one side and screen wire print on the other. The Wurth Group, Charleston Hardwood Center, Greeneville-Spartanburg Hardwood Center and Charlotte Hardwood Center all stock 1/4 tempered hardboard, smooth on both sides. Maybe one of these is close to you.

Funny you mention blast gates, that is why I was looking for the hardboard. I have been going over your recent posts and planned on building some this weekend but I had difficulty finding the materials.

Two thoughts:

The Borgs sell a type of hardboard for use as a (green) chalkboard that is smooth both sides. Probably not as strong as the tempered stuff, though.

Glue together two pieces of the 1/8" regular or the chalkboard, back to back.

Eric, like you, I prefer the hardboard that is smooth on both sides, BUT, if you don't find it readily and are going to use it on Blast gates, you can actually use the smooth one side hardboard, as it ONLY needs to be smooth on the SUCTION side so it will seal when it is in the closed position. The other side doesn't even matter except maybe for looks as long as you have enough space that it doesnt drag when opening and closing.

It is often found at art supply stores. Apparently artist use it to draw or paint on. Be prepared to be gouged, but if you are only needing a small piece, it might be worth it.

i've found 1/4" mdf at my local borg, which i used for blast gates.
