I just got one of these on closeout at HD this weekend. There's no mention in the instructions about suggested uses for the different speeds. So if someone can offer some, I would be appreciative. Do you use slower speeds for softer wood and/or finer grits or vice versa or what? I suppose it may be obvious to some folks, but I've never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. DB

Wide open works best for me.

That is an excellent question Dan, I've often wondered the same thing myself. Whenever I want my single speed ROS to be little less aggressive I just change the grit of paper I'm using. Possibly the variable speed function will allow you to keep using a lower grit longer without worrying about removing too much stock too quickly.
