Hi All,

Another fine example from my collection of silly questions:

In general, would a table saw or a band saw (or neither) be the best choice for cutting an entire 4" x 4" x 4 ft. piece of poplar into 3/8" x 4" x 4 ft widths?

Thanks for the help.

I would go with a bandsaw as the blade curf is smaller so you waste less wood.

A 10" table saw will not cut 4" thick material, I know mine won't (in one pass). Looks like a bandsaw to me.

Bandsaw, otherwise you have to flip your piece and make two passes which means your reference edge better be real flat and true. Depending on the BS you may have some jointing / planing to do.

I'll also vote for a bandsaw-- smaller kerf and a single pass. However, some twist/bow might develop in the cut pieces, depending on the internal moisture content of the wood.

Good luck.

This is a great job for a band saw. You want the face against the fence to be dead flat or a very long tall fence.

Both can do it. The bandsaw would be my first choice.

This is a two handed version :D

I'd go with a bandsaw.

Cheers!
