Last spring I spent time with a couple of club members who wanted to score some ash for pen blanks; and I think they got all they'll ever need:eek: My share of the booty was a bunch of good size blanks in the 16" to 22" range. They've all been roughed for a while now, but since they're too big for my DNA bucket they're on a good old fashioned slow as she goes process and I don't expect to revisit them until some time next year.

But this one, which actually came from piece of scrap limb we hacked off is quite a bit smaller and it thusly dried much quicker. Has had a fine crack down the middle of it since day one but I chose to continue with it just to see what would happen.

Turned out okay and is now in the house as a user. About eleven inches across, four inches high, and 3/8 thick. Gel poly'd and buffed.

OOOOOOO, boy.....
I get to be the first to say, great job! Love the figure in that grain. Curious newbie question: Was the crack of the variety that could be filled by the thicker CA glues, or too big for that?

Very nice bowl. I don't see the crack in the pictures so it must be small. Looks like a lot of pen blanks in that tree.

Mark - I suppose I could have smooshed some fine dust and thick CA glue in there; but I chose not to bother as I wanted to see what it would do on it's own

John - Plain as mud. Center of third pic leading down towards 7:30 (SMC time zone)

That's quite a toothpick you folks cut up!! Or a mighty large pen blank on the hoof... ;)

Seriously, nice score! And, of course, nice bowl.

Schazamm Andy! That's just plain purty. Must be some kind of crotch wood or sumpin' to get all that feather and flame.

Also, did ya get to cut that big old tree down or was it a blow down? I'm kind of saddistic when it comes to watching big trees fall. I love that crash as they hit the ground. That one would have been a good one.

Ya...ya...ya...so you make nice bowls and stuff. But will you ever be as famous as her... Sorry, Glenn. But that shrub doesn't have what it takes to have - much less drink - moxie. Although Olympia sure does.

But presidentially speaking, just take a stroll over to Plymouth Junction, VT. Now this guy had Moxie! (http://www.metrocast.net/%7Emoxieman/coolidge.html)

Oh and Glenn, Andy is an Independent/Democrat. Wash yer mouth out Jim. I'm a registered American!

Curt - It was already down courtesy of the crew putting in a new road. Three guys and one come along to get it on a trailer; and yes, it was a long hot day!

Very nice bowl Andy. Some beautiful grain. I can see the crack but would never have noticed it if you hand't said anything. I expect the guys are still busy turning pens!

Andy,
Do you know what variety of ash you have? I recently turned some Arizona Ash bowls to about 12" diameter. The color was much lighter than yours (sorry, don't have a picture), and the grain turned out to be surprisingly pretty when finished with multiple coats of tung oil.

If that's any indication of what's in that wood just imagine what surprises are in store for you when you get to the rest of it. Nice job Andy.
