I've aquired some wood from a neighbors tree and look what I found inside:eek:. Pictures don't do it justice! I couldn't wait till I was finished turning it to show it off. Besides I had to treat it with a DNA/epoxy mix as it seemed to be cracking real bad.

Like opening up X-mas presents:D

I have never undrstood why someone would tear open a beautiful peice of wood like this and then set it on the lathe waiting for it to crack open and take photos. For Gods sake rough turn "JUST ONE" of the peices and immediatly boil it for a few hours and then let it dry. Then in six weeks you can happily throw away the cracked beyond repair peices and at least have one good one.

John it's hard maple.

Jim as I work outside the shop for a living I did all I could to the piece last night only to return to it tonight to find it cracking. I then DNA/epoxy coated it. It's now wrapped and waiting for 48hrs to finish roughing. I'll the DNA soak it and wait till dry then finish turn. Hopefully it will turn out alright.

Thanks all. I really am treating it with respect and hopefully I have done right by it by sealing it with the "Epoxy Manhattan" method.

Jim, when you come for coffee, you can leave a chunk of wood just like that one with me.

Gary consider it a done deal. But I'll have to sample the coffee first;) just kidding.

Jim,
When I can't complete rough turning a green piece in one session, I sponge water all over it (with plastic covering the lathe bed) and wrap it snugly with plastic from grocery bags secured with masking tape. Seems to prevent cracking for a few hours, but not sure how it would do for longer times.

In that case, you definitely don't want me making it
