Bob Webb Passed Away

Not sure how many of you actually knew Bob. I had just met him a few months back and he was talking me through the purchase of my laser.

He ran a laser engraving business out of his home here in Lake Stevens, WA. One of the nicest guys you ever would have known. He passed away after suffering a heart attack at his home August 21st and was laid to rest this week. Here are a couple of pics I linked off his website.

He was really passionate about his engraving and was a load of fun to talk to. No secrets... just good advice and plenty willing to share and help.

I've never met Bob though I'm not that far away. It sounds llike he has made a positive impact on many people, and I'm sure they will think of him often.
Sad to hear of his passing, my sympathy to his family and friends.

Hi all;

I've recieved a couple of responses regarding Bob's equipment. The family has asked me to help establish a fair price for his laser and associated equipment. It's a grab bag of stuff, but might be a bargain for someone looking for an additional machine or just getting started.

Here's are some details:

- Universal Model ULS-25A 25W laser (tube replaced last year sometime. It now has a Synrad 30W tube and has very few hours on it)
- Computer (running Windows 98 and Corel Draw 9... so I don't know the particulars. I'm guessing it's an older PC)
- Flatbed Scanner
- HP wide-format printer
- Graphics tablet
- Various clipart packages and I think Photograve software
- A grunch of sign blanks, tent, credit card equipment, website, thin woods and other stuff.

Bob's wife is in a pretty dire financial situation, and would like to get a fair price, but needs to get this moving.

I stopped by and got everything fired up and did a test engrave on a piece on MDF. The cabinet is pretty dusty, but everything seemed to work just fine. I can do any test cuts or verify further if someone is seriously interested in the laser.

Any suggestions for what a fair price would be to ask and where she might sell this?

Anyhow... If anyone can give me any ideas as to what she should be asking for this or what it's worth.... Lemme know. I can vouch for it working and can further describe whats included if anyone is interested. basically a turn-key small business opportunity or a good deal on a workhorse 25W?

Mike, you might contact Mike Mackenzie to get some idea of the value of the machine. Since it was built in 1994, it was before ULS started manufacturing their own tubes (hence, the Synrad replacement). If the Synrad goes, it may not be fixable. Mike is a member here and can probably help you value the laser. Hubby and I, as a very uneducated guess, think you might be lucky to get $5K for the whole package. My condolences to the Webb family, and I hope you are able to get this package sold for a fair amount.

The tube is a replacement Synrad. I work just up the street from Synrad here in Mukilteo, WA. What sort of tube did they use previously?

I'm trying to figure out about what she should ask for the whole think. It is pretty dusty and grungy. I just bought mine, so I have no need for it.

Seems to work OK though. Even though I was unfamiliar with the setup of the ULS, I got a file printed in a few minutes.

It doesn't have auto-focus like my Explorer, so that was different. :)

Anyone elsem have an idea of what she should price it at?

I am sorry to say this machine is very old technology, Even though the laser tube has been replaced these systems use an AC style tube in them. Synrad will not fix or replace them anymore.(strike 1) Bob probably got it changed out just before they decided to discontinue that make of laser tube. Then you move onto the drivers This system has to run on Win 98/95 and can not work on Win XP (strike two). Now you move onto the replacement parts if they are still available one of the main reasons for this system to be phased out was due to Roland. ULS used to use the Roland plotter mechanics in those systems. they are simply not available any more (strike 3). I hate to be the bearer of bad news you may only get between 1000 and 2,500. for that system the way it is.

I would post it on E-Bay and see what you can get for it you can also give rob a call at used lasers dot com and see if he has any use for it or can tell you what it might be worth.

I don't know enough about it to give her a valid idea of what to ask for it. It does work OK though, but you're right though... it is running under Windows '98.

Do you have an idea of why XP wouldn't recognize the print driver?
