Hi all -

I need to organize my shop better.

Late November I've gotta close down - unheated garage in Toronto, Ontario - you fill in the blanks.

I figure these two ideas might be perfect wintertime projects - yes, assembled in the living room! My wife's kind of used to it after all thee years....

Does anybody have any photos of
1 - a mobile base/cart they built for their Contractors Saw?
2 - router table insert in their TS wing?

I currently have a standlaone router table using the LV top - which I love - but I could use the extra room if I consolidate router table and TS extension wing.

All observations re pros/cons/things you would do differently next time would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Howard

You can see my RT extension here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=36317 With my shop layout, this works best for me. Of course the advantage of both TS and RT having expanded table space by being joined is good. Many folks mount their RT on the right of the TS but my layout calls for it on the left. This makes my TS and outer RT feed direction the same.

Also, the over-table DC hose for my TS blade guard can be swung over to act as the RT fence hose. Athough the pic shows me using my shop vac hose, I have discontinued this and swing the blade guard hose over now. Many things have changed since this photo including my TS and the addition of an enclosure for the underside of the router table for DC but, this was a good transitional solution.

Howard,

One of the 2003 issues of Canadian Home Worskshop -- May, I think -- has just such a project by Gary Walchuk. Looks great, and I've been thinking of doing something similar to improve the efficiency of things in my basement shop.

But, I don't think I'll put the router table in a wing. I've read lots and lots of comments over the years, by different folks who have done so, and I don't think it'll suit me. Sharing the fence from the TS sounds good in theory, but lots of folks have said it isn't so great in practise. I also recently read comments from several folks that the weight of the router will eventually cause a sag in the TS wing -- needs extra support?

best,
...art

Just wanted to add to Art's comments; definitely add support (cabinet, legs, whatever) for the RT if it becomes part of your TS extension. My 3 1/2 HP router only weighs about 13lbs but after awhile . . . Also, the TS fence only comes into play for captured cuts like dadoes for me. I never use it for edge cuts. My fence rails stop way short of the end of the RT so the RT is effectively exposed on three sides like a stand alone unit but, you'll have to judge this by your own saw / rails to see if it works for you. A stand alone table can also be bigger, of course. One dimension limited to 27" by my TS fence rail spacing.

The main router table is a piece of 3/4in Marine ply and a 1/2in of MDF. It is then covered both sode in Formica. The band around it is White Oak.

Howard, Here's a couple of pics of my old contractor's saw. This is a base that was from a set of plans inwood magazine about 8-9 yrs ago. You can't see it in these pics. But the router table wing is on the other side. Hope it helps. I posted these in another thread. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=31274 (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=31274)

Here is what I have. As you can see I am not finished yet, but so far I am very pleased with the cart. I put the router in the right wing and am going to add some drawers some time soon.

Howard,
This is what I made, it was from a article in,I think, Wood Mag , About 1993. I didn't put it on wheels. I can move it as needed. I can put a router in each wing, but I only use the left side. The winds are made of heavy duty particle bd 1 1/2" thick, no sag. I used 1 1/4 x 1/8" angle iron front and rear for support. Most sawdust falls into the center box which has a filter in the door. The overall width of the top is 53". The plan called for 4 open compartments behind the drawers, I don't use them, I wish I had made the drawers deeper.
