Even though I make my living as an engraver and I engrave on wood as a matter of necessity it has always seemed to me that for boxes and certain other gift objects engraving detracts from the appearance.

That probably sounds like blasphemy but I think for beautiful handmade objects inlays make more sense. They're a little harder to do and a little more expensive.

If it's desirable to include some kind of message an engraved plate can be installed inside the lid or even on the back.

I 2nd Mike N's idea for a tag or small plaque on the inside, however you can engrave the top! I once had a customer bring in a BEAUTIFUL english hunting rifle who wanted the stock engraved. This stock was swirly crotch walnut with wild grain and I burned it up pretty good~I was sad, he was happy, go figger:eek:

Oak doesn't laser well, but maple, cherry and alder do, walnut does, but the contrast isn't great. Might be able to ask around to find someone who has inlayed before (I haven't). Then you could use oak and walnut. then inlay with maple (if the top was walnut... great contrast). You could also put the name on the front, if that's where the walnut would be.

Mike, I inlay and veneer a fair bit. Visit my site to see if some of my stuff is along the lines of what you're thinking of - drop me a line if I can help.
