I am now officially on vacation until Thursday morning when we load the truck for the show...

This is a very simple cherry quiltrack. The circle in the side is cherry burl, and covers up the compass hole that I foolishly put on the outside instead of the inside. Afterward I decided to just make a template so I won't have to put a hole in either side anymore. The cross pieces are simply 1" x 1-1/4" cherry with a 3/8" roundover all around. They're a little bigger than planned, a result of poor chisel work when I was cleaning up the mortises. This is certainly nuthin' special, but it was nice to be able to knock something out in a few hours that might actually be useful.

Next is a the chess table of mesquite and 'mystery' wood I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago. I still don't know what it is, other than dark. The decorative striping is curly maple and mystery wood, the outside border mesquite. I think the board came out quite nice...

...but I'm not happy with the base. :( I haven't made a three legged table in many years, and couldn't find the pictures to use as reference. I cut dovetail slots for the legs in the post without too much bother, but had just a helluva time getting the cuts right on the legs. The legs look too small for the table because they are too small...I cut 'em down about three times trying to get the dovetail right. But I learned a lesson.

Last is a slightly modified version of the WOOD Mission rocker. I use three back splats instead of four, and take out the lower stretcher at the front (beacause it gets in the way of your feets while rocking). Since I mentioned that, I'll also mention that I think the seat is a bit too deep according to the plan, and the upper front frame piece hits me in the back of the legs...not sure whether it's because of the depth of the seat or the width of the frame (3"). Whichever it is, it's a problem on both of these I've built. I put a gentle bend in the upper back legs instead of just leaving it straight, and I won't use fake 'through' tenons like they do in the mag (and I didn't bother making real ones, either). The seat is 3" foam, and wrapped in some kind of tan/beige suede feeling scraps that my upholstery dude had laying around. I didn't spray this, just WATCO natural and a couple applications of WATCO Satin Wax.

Thanks for browsing...I won't bore you with any more pictures until at least Monday. :D

I'm "in love" with that chess table, KC! The contrasting species, whatever the "mystery" wood is, is outstanding.

It's true that the male dovetail on the legs can be a challenge with this design. What I did when I made a Shaker candle stand recently (awaiting final finishing) is to make an "extra leg" out of scrap and use it to creep up on the right size before routing the edges of the real legs. If you mill the scrap to thickness at the same time as the project material, you'll get an exact match. That cut out a lot of angst. Of course I also am glad I made an extra leg out of the cherry, too, as I cracked a bottom corner on one when rounding over the edges after tapering the tips down. (That gives the legs a lighter feel than leaving them the same thickness, especially if the table top is thin)

KC - the production machine! Shoot, between now and Thursday, you ought to be able to knock out a 7' x 3' slant front hutch and 2 blanket chests. Don't be slacking on us now - we know you can do it...

Todd.

You had to bring me in on it :D

KC, that rocker is gorgeous. I am not a fan of the mission style but you did a superb job. I love that you just oiled and waxed it too. That gives it the "old fashioned" look and feel.
