Well, here is another piece from the fallen oak tree. Doesn't have any red hue in this one, but does have ample spalting. 6 3/8" x 2".

Chris,
What procedure did you use to rough turn and dry the oak? I have a couple of oak logs to maybe 20" dia., have roughed a couple pieces and sealed the outside, but am only cautiously optimistic that they will dry (eventually) without cracking.

Since this was from an oak that had rotted and fell in my yard, I find that the wood is pretty much dry already toward the top of the tree where this bowl came from. So, I just went straight to the lathe and finished turned it. Hope it works out for you. I would suggest considering the DNA method for your situation.

Spalting does wonders for oak. Nice even shape.

Chris, Thanks for your response. Despite being from a dead tree, my logs are surprisingly moist on the inside (from maybe 1-1/4" inside the bark to the center). Need to protect the lathe bed when turning moist oak, as it will stain the ways in a matter of minutes. I like to spray the ways with Boeshield and then cover that with plastic. Good looking bowl.

You're doin' a great job with that OAK. Not the easiest thing to turn!

Well done.
