View Full Version : CS cutting table for amateurs

Good day

The setup is not final (as you will see) but it’s working.

The idea is that I can assemble and disassemble the setup in very short time (small garage).

Your comments for improvement will be appreciated, just keep in mind that I’m an amateur and I like the things simple (and cheap).

And most of all I don't like to cut my table, so this is the result...

Regards
niki

Looks like it does the trick.

I wrestled with similar solutions for years, and finally came across one that seems to work well. A friend had given me a workbench with a top made of screwed on 2x6's. I removed the 2x6's, planed them smooth, and glued four together. I screwed the 4 2x6s and 1 more to some 2x4's, leaving a gap for the 6th 2x6. This one I attached 2 hanger bolts to, and drilled holes in the 2x4's for these bolts. I can fasten and remove the 6th 2x6 with just 2 knobs that screw onto the hanger bolts.

Here's a sketch of the view from the bottom.

When the 6th 2x6 is attached, it looks like a standard, sturdy workbench.
When the 2x6 is removed, you get a nice cutting channel, plus enough sturdy wood on both sides of the channel to clamp both sides of your workpiece.

NOW he does. :D :D :D

Just teasin' Niki. That looks very good and very functional. But you better watch out. You may be in competiton with that OTHER straightline cutting system.:D :D :D

Don't see one in the pic.

Very ingenious way to take care of the cuts. Takes up less space than a TS too.

Thank you

Cliff
And what’s a table saw (see pic), I use the CS very seldom, only to cut very long boards, that’s why I made this simple and cheap setup.

Mark
I know what you mean but I don’t think that there is something to compete, you can make it in 15 minutes (if you are slow) and the cost is two Styrofoam plates.

Ed
You can see it on the second pic. Covered with cardboard.
And here it is in his full glory.

Oh ya, nobody said that you cannot lay the Styrofoam on the floor to cut a full size panel (once the panel is on the Styrofoam you can even “seat” on it for better control).

I have a piece of 1.5" insulation foamboard (one side shiny silver, the other is just white) I get at the borg that I lay on my benchtops and garage floor all the time for cuts. When it gets chewed up enough, I pitch it and buy another sheet. One usually lasts me a year...year and a half.

To clarify, I was just teasing about the competition thing too Niki, sorry.

Chris
You are lucky that you have it in US, I did not here even about 1.5” of such a foamboard here in Poland.

Mark
I know, nothing to be sorry, maybe I answered too seriously.

Nicki: You are the best at being and Inovator and making your own jigs and fixtures. Thanks for putting all of this on SMC.
