A few days ago the question was asked about how the choice of turning a bowl with the bark side up or down affects the grain.

I was pondering the same question a couple of weeks ago, and to answer it cut a small log of Garry Oak down the centre, and turned a bowl from each half, one bark up and one bark down.

The outcomes, as most of you know, are as different as can be.

This photo shows how the bowls sat in the log before it was cut and turned, and how the orientation affects the grain, and, of course, the edge and shape of each bowl. (Excuse the plastic spacer.)

I was told it would be helpful to see the log from which the bowls were turned. This is the adjacent piece.
