Getting ready to order some gouges unhandled that have 3/8th" and 1/2" shanks, what size should the ferrule be, i was thinking 1/4" of wood around the shaft would be good, how thick should the handle be, is there a formula that works for this?
thanks

I've made a couple. My 'formula' is what feels comfortable in my hand and is sturdy.

Nominal 1/4" is fine. Even a little less is ok since the metal is supporting that area. I just use copper pipe "leavings" and it works out fine. Most of the time, that's 3/4" but 1" for something big.
