View Full Version : Another Defection

Well, I've seen a few other new members over here in SMC who I've met at that "other" forum. Don't know if it's OK to mention them by name. While I'm not in the league with the other recent "defectors", I do enjoy my hobby of woodworking and am hoping to learn from the good people here on SMC.

Welcome, Blaine. I need to check out the "other" forum to see the reasons for the mass exodus. Now all I need know is, "what other forum?"

Come on in Blaine, the water in the Creek is pleasant. :) We will learn from you just as you may learn from us. Pictures when you get a chance. We are all hobbiests here, it's just that some of us are Highly Professional Hobbiests who make their living at it, while others, like me, just putz around. :D Welcome.

I don't think of it as defection or exodus--There are quite a few SMC members who have also been active on WN and other forums. Some SMC members are also more active elsewhere. And vice versa.

As well, some of the Knots members have also come here lately--some didn't know SMC existed.

Take care, Mike

Welcome, Blaine. SMC is a great community and your input will be valued.

Some of us pretty much make this "home" (with occasional visits elsewhere), others participate in a variety of forums regularly and still others only stop by SMC on occasion as they call somewhere else "home". No problem with any of these...

Hello Blaine,

It's good to see you here. As a creek member for all of two days, let me welcome you, and as always, if you need anything shoot me a PM.

I registered on Saturday and there has been quite a bit of movement this weekend.

Thanks John. Frankly, I've been lurking here on SMC for some time, but seeing your addition, as well as Mark's, made the sale for me.

I'll still visit Woodnet (Can I say that?) often as there are lots of great folks over there. I don't think there's a mass exodus for any specific reason, but it does have its ups and downs.

I've tried to download a picture of my most recent project.

I don't think of it as defection or exodusCertainly not, I think it's just coincidence...:p

I know many folks frequent more than one place on the net, I know I do. I just find it interesting that so many people are all of the sudden leaving that "someplace else" on the net that is so often frequented. It must be a coincidence...;)

They must have had a doozy over there, recently...:D

I doubt so many folks would be getting an epiphany to be annoyed at the same time...but then again, could be coincidence...

Welcome! As others have said; some of us call this home (I visit a couple times a day, at least) and visit elsewhere. The folks here have a great wealth of knowledge, a great sense of humor and we all have pretty thick skin so you won't hurt anybody's feeliongs if you want to go 'visit' your old stomping grounds, eh? Once again Welcome.

Welcome Blaine,
After lurking on 5-6 forums for several years, I have narrowed down to three the number that I find to be excellent. I still visit nearly all but I find the vitriole, cynicism, and sarcasm on several to tarnish them. The creek and my other two choices seem to harbor far more goodwill and comraderie than the others. The moderators do a great job of maintaining civility without being heavy-handed or quick to hit the "censor" button. Welcome and I look forward to your input.

Hey Dave!

Yeah, I got home OK, even with some rain most of the way. Frank came over last night to pick up his share of the haul. I thought I divided the stuff pretty randomly, but I think he got all the good boards.:D

It's going to be a while before I get to using any of that walnut. I've got at least three projects in line and maybe four if Mark Marzluf is able to make some plans for a Krenov style cabinet for me.

Thanks very much for helping me out with that wood. Don't know if it's OK to announce that you are selling what "fell off the truck", but I gotta say that I'm really happy with what I got.

Hmmmm...... I had heard the folks over here were pretty tame as compared to the other forum on which I STILL participate. I can tell you that I have not been banned and truly resent that you have implied that I have. Every forum seems to have its troublemakers. I sure thought there were fewer over here. Feel free to go to that other forum and search for my user name. Shoot, I'll be happy to give you a link if you send me a private message. My user name is the same as my first name here - I'm not ashamed to state who I am along with what I say. When you find any post I've made, you can click on my name, go to my personal info page and click another button to see all of my posts. There may be one where I went overboard among the more than a thousand posts and that was because I felt that someone had insulted my Mother after her death.

An apology is in order. Also, of the people I know from the other site and who have posted on this thread, I guarantee they haven't been banned.

After a pretty good start, this thread has taken a wrong turn.

Sincerely,

Blaine Harrison

Man, this thread has gotten into gossip, inuendo, belittling and, well, silliness.

What may or may not have happened in regards to Alan's being prevented from posting on WN is pretty much no ones business unless he elects to share.

I will say that not everyone who has been banned from WN has committed some grievious thing that went above and beyond what the rest of us heathens there do.

Take care, MikeMike,

While I feel I was wrongfully ban'd from WoodNet, and do not respect their management one iota whatsoever for it, I don't feel it is something that should be aired in public as it was their judgement to do so. If anyone really wants to know what I think happened, they can contact me via email, which is available on my profile.

The irony of watching folks leave on their own accord is quite humorous. I've always had a slightly twisted sense of humor, so humor me more if you will...:p

I was more referring to the gent who couldn't spell my name correctly, but it looks like he might not be able to spell his own name either, the moderators seem to be looking into that!

EDIT: Isn't it ironic that the "someplace else" now has moderation?:confused::D

Oh, BTW, welcome to the creek Hugh! (whoever you might be, defector, Jaskok, or Jasho). Do you think that someone from that "someplace else" would use a name like that? I say his posts will be short lived.

Nice table Blaine, what type of varnish did you use?

Do you keep the table outdoors? I haven't made anything for outdoors yet, but have a small section of decking coming up that could entail some varnish. What kind of wood is that, it looks nice.

The table is made from teak decking that I bought several years ago from Lumber Liquidators for about $1.50/bdft. Too good a deal to pass up. The varnish is a marine exterior Spar varnish with UV protection. I forget the name now, but if I had it to do over, I'd use a Waterlox product. I used a couple coats of Watco Teak Oil under the varnish. And yes, the table is kept outdoors, but it's covered with a fabric called Sunbrella that's basically used in the marine field. Howie Acheson was highly instrumental in the choice of varnish and the Sunbrella cover - gotta give credit where credit's due.

Thanks for the compliment.
