Its finally done! After many problems trying to smooth the purpleheart it came out pretty nice. Its solid purpleheart top and drawer fronts & solid walnut base. The sides of the drawer are ebony. All mortise and tenon contruction except the drawer slides. The finish is arm r seal glossy with pumice stone dust worked into the finish first to seal the pores. The design was my own with dimensions taken from my old coffee table. The top is 24" x 48".

Absolutely Beautiful!

I hope the purpleheart project I am working on now turns out half as nice.

Robert,
Beautiful coffee table!! I can imagine that you have a few splinters in your hands and a few dull blades after working with the purpleheart. I like purpleheart also and have used it some(although not as big a project as yours). I also have not found/used any that has the figure like yours. I will, have to be on the lookout for some.
Anyway, nice table and wood. I'm sure you will enjoy looking across that one form the sofa.
I noticed a few nice looking pieces behind the table also.

Very striking and very cool Robert. I notice the other pieces of furniture that you have used figured wood in as well. Very nice.

The stuff was very hard and the figure tears out really easy. I had to get a cabinet shop to run it through the wide belt sander a few times.

Yalza! That's some pretty incredible looking wood, Robert. I was just skim-planing some PH and I can't imagine the amount of work you must have done to get that table so great...hard stuff and very ornery. I like the design of your table...it really turned out wonderfully.

I got it at a local sawmill in spavinaw, ok. That was all they had left. I have one piece left, 8" wide and about 4ft long. I wont tell that i paid $20 for 2 8ft long pieces of it.

The top is just under an inch thick, its really heavy as you can imagine.

That's some amazing wood, Robert. I've seen and used quite a bit of purpleheart, but never any with that kind of figure. Great job.

Don't MAKE me come out to Oklahoma to slap you around. :D That's a steal if ever there was.

Looking really good Robert. I've always liked Purpleheart with Walnut and other darker woods, makes for a good contrasting match.

I don't know what to be more impressed with; the price of the wood, the figure of the wood, or the project outcome. Combine all three and I'd say you got one heck of project gloat there. Nicely done (on all counts).

Without your idea of using the pumice to fill the pores it would not have turned out near as smooth on the top.

Thanks for all the nice comments...
