Craftsman Door

Bob Marino keeps putting me on the spot...he asked if I would I post this door I made last Winter. It was too cold to work outside under my tent, so I used my father's shop. It's a solid Mahogany door with tapered stiles. It's not my design, but I was challenged to make it given its complexity. I laminated two 5/4's planks together in a press with their grains opposed to create the stable stiles and rails for the door. I cut the tapered stiles with my Festool TS 55 and guide rail. I had to make the rip cut from both sides and clean up the remaining material left from the radius of the blade with a sharp chisel. The accuracy of this cut, despite the fact that it was the same cut made from opposite sides, is testimony of Festool's claim to precision. There's a close up shot in there so you can see the tightness of the joints. I also made the custom jamb (the wall thickness was some oddball 5-3/8" thick) with kerf-in weatherstipping and the matching Mahogany saddle. I used 3/4" insulated glass and finished it with 3 coats of Teak Oil.

That is a beautiful door. I have many books on Craftsman style interiors and houses, and your door is the equal of any of them featured.

Doors are tricky, I've made two of them. I can appreciate, and respect all of the "little steps" you took to make the door. The joinery looks first rate.

Which brings to my request/question.

The rail below the window section appears to be some form of a haunched, mitered tenon. Do you have a picture, or can you make a drawing of that joint detail? I would really like to have it for future reference.

Mike - Thank you for the compliments. The middle rail of which you speak is just a mortise and tenon joint, but with angle cheeks/shoulders rather than square ones. Here's my AutoCAD drawing if this helps illustrate the joinery...

Having that 29" wide dimension referenced to the internal edge of the tenons with no visible vertical line must have been quite a challenge to keep track of.

Actually, the depth stop on the hollow chisel mortiser I used took care of this. Regardless of the width of the material used, the mortiser always stopped at the same depth throughout the stile. If I chiseled out the mortises by hand, then things would've been more challenging.

Thanks again, everyone for the compliments. This door wasn't for my house, sorry to say. I made these two simpler doors for my house a few years back (porch and entry).
