Last spring I was treated to my first creeker visit (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=34575) and in the process I was able to trade some of that "wonderfully delicious spalted hickory" for this small chunk of Clabo Burl. Compared to the marshmallow-like hickory this stuff turned like concrete, so after roughing it soon after acquisition I set it aside. Picked it up again last week, as seen in this thread (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=41590), and it is now complete.

Before I put up pics of the finished product, I thought some of you might like to see how I dealt with finishing off the bottom of this thing. As conceived, there were no openings in the walls so I planned to vac mount it. But after final hollowing I realized that wasn't gonna work:eek:, so I utilized the jamb chuck method with an unusual shape to the chuck. Worked very well. Then to remove the nub on the bottom I carefully pared as much as possible away until there was about 1/8" holding the piece together. The third pic shows how I oriented a detail gouge. Then at a slow speed I just ran it in along the bottom and sliced through. The last pic shows the result. The piece is still spinning; the nub isn't; and the gouge is wedged in between. It displaces the wood that it removes. I do this one handed so the other can hit the kill switch.

And here it is all finished.

It ended up about 6" tall and wide. Clear Watco and buffed.

Hey man, I think there's a hole in your bowl. It looks real nice Andy. Those pieces of wood with parts missing can turn out the most interesting turnings.

Hey, not bad for an old geezer..........:D

Looks like those southern boys rubbed some skill on you. Either that or the grits finally overcame the effects of Moxie:eek: Awesome piece of art there Andy!!

Hi Andy
"Not bad" they may say. Well you have to interpret that as "Pretty damn good !!" Now we know your skill level :p
Well done,
Ken

Egads, man!!! I'm a'feared that a piece like that in my shop would've ended up being more like 10 or 20 pieces!!! That's sweet, Andy, even though it won't hold a whole lot of ice cream! :D

Beautiful work... I love to watch someone else' technique in finishing off the bottom, with a jam chuck. That is my Achillis Tendon !

Thanks all. Yup, I do indeed like my new rig.

But Randy's laser puts the whole notion of hollering way beyond like.

Tomorrow I'll be starting another one, ambrosia maple this time, and it too came from a fellow creeker.
