I haven't gotten the catalog yet. But, I think the new tools are chairmaking tools. I know I've read some threads here and there about them, but there wasn't anything I am immediately interested in. So ... I don't remember any of the details. I'm sure someday when I make some chairs, I'll be glad they are available though ;)

I believe there will be other new tools in the catalog...and LV is yet working on more which will appear in the supplements...

Take care, Mike

I see several new tools on their website this afternoon--chair-making tools, especially.

By coincidence, I'm going to be driving up to Vancouver from Seattle on Monday for business - I'll drop by Lee Valley and see what I can find regarding new tools.

No catalogs there until September either but they had a sign on the door warning that prices were going up on September 1st even if the catalog wasn't out yet.

Nothing new in the store to report either.

I heard somewhere that the US catalogue was mailing this week and the Canadian catalogue (in 3 parts) is mailing next week.

Well my new LV catalog showed up in the mail today. There's a pretty sweet intro price on an iron edge-trimming plane that looks pretty good.

How come all the Americans are getting it first?

As a Canadian (the home of LVT!), and a loyal customer, who has NOT received the catalog yet, I feel I need to publicly express my disappointment with Lee Valley for this terrible terrible treatment.

And yes, I realize that all you folks "down there" in the USofA are not going to have any sympathy for a fellow who has a LVT store in his home town. :D

Hmm, I just had a thought, I wonder if the catalog actually arrived and has been stolen by someone who-shall-not-be-named who lives in my house...

impatiently yours,

Art, it's all about big ones--markets that is. Bet LV sells 3-4 times more south of your border than north.

I've been a LV shopper for years now. Just love the catalogue, their products and their service. I've never had the opportunity to visit their store(s) in Canada, but would love to do it someday. I'm trying to convince my wife and three young daughters that a 8 hour road trip to Lee Valley (a.k.a Daddy's Toy Store) would be a wonderful way to spend a weekend. No takers. :)

Have any of you been to the LV stores? What are they like (compared to the Rockler/Woodcraft type store)?

Can anyone speculate as to why they wouldn't have expanded south of the boarder?

LVT stores are catalog stores. All the stuff on display is samples. You browse the store, fill in an order form, and the helpful and knowledgeable staff fetch the items from the back warehouse and bring it out for you to inspect and then take to a cashier.

In addition, there will be a few areas where they have special deals or closeout items. The other interesting thing is that they always have a section of returned/damaged items for sale at a discount. I always make it a point to visit that area!

And finally, the stores have classrooms where you can attend various woodworking or gardening or related classes. A complete list is on the LVT website and you can sign up online or call a store.

I think that about covers what a LVT store is like.

As to border crossing... I asked something similar when I toured the LVT headquarters back in July. If I recall correctly the answer was something like this: There is a huge amount of cost, regulations, and red tape involved in any business that wants to set up shop across the border. Supposedly there are also varied regulations in each state that would also add to the headache and cost of doing business.

Arthur, don't listen to Art, What does he know. I'll tell you about LVT stores:...........

When you drive up to the store there is ALWAYS a place for you to park right in front of the doors. A cute little LVT pixie opens your door and gently helps you out of your car/truck/SUV.

You enter the store on a puffy soft mixture of various colored wood shavings. Another cute little LVT pixie immediately offers you a choice of refreshments perfectly suited to the weather outside; For example, if it was very hot outside the cold drinks would be a refreshing 4 degrees (Celcius, of course) or if it was cold outside there might be cider with just the right amount of cinnamon. Any beverage you favor is available to you. Along with the drinks, warm cookies just minutes out of the oven (any flavor you choose) are available to you as well. The inside atmosphere is adjusted to a scientifically perfect temperature, again depending on the outside weather. The air, while clean and free of particulates, smells exactly like an oldtime woodworkers shop with a delicate balance of slightly warm walnut, teak and oak aromas, along with just a hint of pixie dust, wafting through the store.

Magically, all of your favorite tools are always in stock and perfectly fettled/tuned for you to use immediately should you purchase one. As soon as you just even begin to head toward a tool, one of those cute little LVT pixies (who is a specialist in each and every tool) is again at your side offering to help you with any and all questions you may have about the tool. Every tool fits your hand perfectly and feels like an extension of your woodworking soul. All you have to say to a cute little LVT pixie is that you would like to have a certain tool and it is magically at the checkout station waiting for you.

In the back shop area, ANY tool you may want to try is immediately available and is perfectly adjusted to you and your woodworking style. If you are unfamiliar with a tool, another one of those cute LVT pixies (gotta love those cute litle pixies) lovingly guides your hands into the proper position and, with her hands still on yours, shows you exactly how to use the tool to it's fullest potential.

There is no hurry, no rush, no pressure....indeed, you are in a place where time stands still and your every woodworking need and desire is able to be satisfied, should you only wish it.

The store seems immense, with every woodworking tool you can imagine being at your beck and call. Even though you cover every square inch of the store, your legs are perfectly relaxed as if you are reclining in a huge puffy pixie chair.

When (IF!) you are ready to leave, you only need to show the cute little LVT pixie at the register your wallet and your card (debit or charge) is magically scanned and you are on your way. As you head out the door, again on the puffy soft mixture of variously colored wood shavings, the cutest of the cute little LVT pixies carries out your purchase and lovingly places it in your vehicle as you are gently helped into your seat and safely buckled in for your trip home. As you drive away, every light controlled intersection is green in your direction for the next hour of driving with no traffic within 500 yards of you, should you be driving that far.

Hope that answers your question Arthur.

Pixie dust???
Sounds great to me, except when I walk the the front door with pixie dust on me, the shebeast will lay a beating on me.....:)

You oughta see her when I drag sawdust though the house, that's bad enough...
