Take a look at the one in the middle. What does it look like to you? I put walnut to the left and curly maple to the right to attempt to show how red this wood is.

I'd have to see a better closeup of the grain, but it might be red beech. Cant tell for sure from the pic though.

This wood has no orange tint to it, and although there are some lighter spots, not as light as the pics of osage I've seen. (not that it isn't, I have no idea). It is not as heavy as either the maple or walnut.

I've seen lots of mahogany with that sort of flat figure. Colour-wise mahog fits also. I'd need to see a much better photo to be anywhere near certain, though.

What's the story on it? Where did it come from? Help a brutha out !

There's a type of Mahagony I've seen that looks like that, I think it's from the Phillipines.

i'm guessing some form of mahogany also. I was going to say Jatoba, until you said that it was lighter in weight than the others. Jatoba is heavy, and hard.

Here is a closeup of the grain. It is an open grain.

I found about 20 bf in my dad's basement, so that dates it about 40 years old. He has alzheimers, so he can't help me on the identification. I am making an occasional table with it, so it will be interesting to see how it finishes.

That's some nice Honduras mahogany by the look of it.

After the closeup pic I'm also switching my vote to some type of Mahog.

I just looked at a picture of mahogany on wilkpedia, and the picture looks exactly like the one I just posted. I am voting mahogany also.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Some form of mahogany is my guess...

Yeah it does look like one of the many species that are passed of as "Mahogany" Although the grain is not as reversing as I'm used to seeing. Maybe it's just the part we've got the close up of. Although the weight of it suggests otherwise, the close-up also looks alot like Teak.

If you sand it, does it have a pepper smell?

Jatoba maybe?

Andrew, my father stored this wood with, you guessed it, cedar. It had a slight cedar smell until I milled it, now it does not. I did not notice a peper smell when sawing, but honestly I wasn't paying close attention. I have to make more cuts tomorrow, and I will pay attention.

Spanish cedar is a stable, relatively light wood (compared to mahagany, it is a little lighter in weight). It is used in clasical guitar necks and some cigar humidors. If you have a Rockler nearby, they stock it.

I guessed 'Mahogany' before looking at any other responses and the close-up sealed the deal for moi. :)

If it's not Honduras mahogany, send me 1 bd/ft and I'll figure out a way to eat it.

It looks identical to some 8/4 Honduran mahogony that I have laying around.
