I was asked to explain a bit more on the hollow twist I made so here is a starter.

1) I turn the Newel I intend on working with, picture one
a)set up pattern
b) load blank
c)for big turnings over 4" I reset pin on back of lathe for a deeper cut and reset cutter accordingly.
d) set diameter for correct turning.
e) turn post.

2) I then setup router head and the indexing head with drive gears.
a) I move my pattern 1 3/16 inches to the right for the cutter head offset.
b) for straight flutes I set the depth of cut and set the index head for the amount of cuts or divisions in this case eight.
c)set the ears on the pattern for the hydrolic pin to land on and ease into the cut.

3) For the twist its the same system but I engage the gear box on the front wich will cut left or right hand threads.
a) set cutter
b) decide on number of starts ( number of starts * cutter width = gear ratio )
c) select gear ratio
d) make cuts

This is a basic version and I left out many steps but it should give a good idea of the system used.
I did not hollow this one ,but if was going to I would replace the router bit with a straight bit and make multiple cuts in depth till I cut through.

It is a Hapfo hydro king . It is a hydrolic Single knife machine. I sharpen my own steel with a special grinder. It has two steady rests that run on the square portion of a turning in front of the cutter,it produces a finish that requires little or no sanding. It is powered by a 3 phase four horse 220 volt motor a dc motor for the drive train I believe it is two horse. It can turn a 96" post and has a swing of twenty inches. It can flute twist rope and of course turn. The patterns are plexi glass I can make a pattern from an45257 existing post or any thing else, or from a cad drawing like the one shown.but I still hand cut the hash marks on the acorns with hammer chisel and file. The control box has a lever that sets either a right hand or left hand thread .It makes the lead screw in the front of the lathe move either clockwise or counterclockwise. 45255
