View Full Version : Outfeed table - how far below table?

I recently built an outfeed table for my table saw and tried to get the level of the outfeed just below the level of the table saw.
I realize after some time though that it was a mistake getting the outfeed so close to the same level as the saw.
How far below the level of the table saw should the outfeed table be?
thanks
Jeff

It depends on how large the gap between the TS top and the outfeed table is. In my set up (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hoa_dinh@sbcglobal.net/detail?.dir=403a&.dnm=d3ec.jpg&.src=ph), the gap is only 2 inches. The outfeed table is almost level with the TS top. It is also very easy to adjust the height of the outfeed table.

Jeff, as long as the outfeed table's top is within a couple of inches, (as dictated by the fence rail on each saw), I mount mine level with the TS table. I do use a 45* bevel bit in the router to put a bevel on the outfeed table's infeed edge, and I've not had any problems with this arrangement. Of course, you do have to route out slots for the miter bar to extend into the outfeed table, and I usually make them about 1/8" deeper than the slots in the TS.

Jeff:
My outfeed table is 4 1/2" back from TS, to clear rear fixture of Excal. fence and clear motor ( contractor TS ). The table has 6 legs with adjusters. I use levels to first, set TS level in both X and Y, then outfeed is 1/16" lower, which I use 4 levels to level it in X and Y, adjusting front and rear adjusters. When it right-on I just snug down center leg adjusters.

Mine is about 3" from the TS, and is just a hair lower......

It has worked fine now for 4 years or so.

Cheers!

Jeff: MY table is probably 1/16th below the saw table and butts up against the back rail. Adjustable feet make it easy to raise or lower the outfeed table.

Jeff, I'm in a minority here, but mine is 3/4" lower than the table saw. I leave a 12" space between the saw and workbench / outfeed table which lets me squeeze in occassionally to reach the backside of a big project. Most saw cuts don't need outfeed support (rails / stiles). 1/2" and 3/4" boards can be left on the bench without being knocked off by a saw cut. When I need to cut 8ft+ boards, I put one or two 12" wide x 6' long x 3/4" plywood boards on top of the workbench. They touch and are level with the saw table. A couple of 2x4 scraps under the board located front and back of the workbench hold them in place.

If my workbench was separate from the outfeed table, I'd flush them up.

Mine's a 1/2" or so.
Reason being, is that when ripping this unstable, warpy crap they call 1/4" plywood, is so that when the end of it droop's down it won't catch the outfeed table

Mine is about 1/16" lower. Works for me...:)
