Well I took the advice of our esteemed Andy Hoyt tonight. I turned a platter out of a walnut plank. My sisters first husband made guitars and banjos before he died of cancer. She found these planks 6' long by 11 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" thick in the corner in the basement. So she gave them to me this weekend after helping lay floor. I have enough to make a set of 8. The LOML just flipped when she saw it after I put the walnut oil on it. Just finished it and just put on the oil. It turned out to be 11 1/8" across, 3/8" thick and stands about 7/8" high. Like I said I am using Mike Mahoney's walnut oil. When that dries I will put on the walnut oil/beeswax/carnuba wax combo of his on top of that. This is the first platter I have attempted after watching Mikes video and our own Andy Hoyts tutorial.

Bernie, you had to start out with some great looking wood to get something this pretty.

Thanks for the comments. I will take a picture Glenn of the plank it came out of. You would never think something that beautiful would come out of it.

Henry I am afraid to show it to her for fear she will want it back. Not really I plan on making her one to.
