Graham,
Peak season, good, and 70-100 may be a real challenge.... Will be a lot of visitors, aka "leaf peepers", in the area until around Columbus Day.... I'll ask around and see what comes up, but this may be a challenge.... Are you looking for a hotel or a B&B? And for how long? weekend, or mid-week?

Don't know if it's still there, but the "Ho Jos" at the bottom of Tuckerman's was my favorite haunt years ago.

Beware of Andy hoyt's suggestion. It's a bit of an inside joke for extreme skiers and mountaineers. HoJo's was the rest stop at the base of the steepest section of Tuckerman's Ravine and is only accessible to folks who make the 2 1/2 mile walk up the ravine with a 2500 foot gain in altitude on the way. I've spent many a wonderful winter night at the Hermit Lake shelters a short ways away and at the HMC cabin in Huntington Ravine.

$10/night I was just there a couple weeks ago. The view is GREAT, the room service bit lacking.
If you go I HIGHLY reccomend shelter #3, great view of the lake AND the outhouse is right behind it.

after spending a lot of my youth living in a log cabin and using an outhouse it would be just like home to me, the better half would be a different story. actually we're planning on staying 3 nights in a hotel during the first week in
september, which is probably a little prior to leaf changing season. North Conway or Jackson will likely be our destination but we haven't ruled out other areas as well.

Check out the Red Coach Inn in Franconia...I have stayed there a few times and they are always running specials and deals....especially if you play golf.
