Hello everyone,

I did the final glued up on my big ash table tonight,

With the new longer drawer runners in, it wasn't 4" to narrow this time (Doh!) I did measure twice the first time, I just measured the wrong thing....

Here is the table as it stands right now with the drawer in it and the drawer kicker installed,

Here is a close up of the drawer,

The dovetails are not perfect and I am alright with that. I much prefer the oddities and irregularities of not perfect dovetails vs. machine cut precision.

The reveal around the drawer is quite small, just what I was looking for,

All I have to do now is make the buttons to hold the top to the skirt (although gravity might be enough with the top weighing in at ~150lbs) and pick a finish. I am vacillating between water based poly for total ease (and inevitable damage from a 16 year old) and a stain and oil poly finish. I know the foreman would like a dark or dark red finish. I am still on the fence about the finish. I guess I will know tomorrow when I start it...

Thanks for looking,

David.

David,

That table isn't going to break........
you'd have to take a SAWZALL to it!!! :D :)

The drawer joinery is outstanding.......VERY NICE WORK!

And since you didn't ask.... ..... I might lean toward's the Foreman's idea of a finish. I also just used General Finish'es water based poly on a coat n lunch bag type of divider for first grades (to be posted soon),,,,and I'm a little indifferent about the finish. It took a full FOUR coats to get the grain smoothed out due to the "raising" created from the water base. It's their 'high performance Poly"........so should be very durable....but like I said......I'm not convinced its "furniture grade"....
It was the Satin version over poplar and BB ply......it's hard to even see the finish......so it puzzles me somewhat!

I do recommend General Finishes "seal a cell & Arm r Seal" though....but it's urethane and maybe you need more durability. BTW - I know very little about finishes.....  :o

Looks real good David. One question, How did you cut out the drawer front from the same board to keep the grain consistent with the primary front? Inquiring and learning minds wanna know. :D

Look really really close at the corners of the drawer, Dennis. There's a rip/glue line.

Excellent work, David. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I ripped and crosscut the skirt leaving the drawer front,

And then glued it all back together,

Thanks,

Dennis, check out the "Shaker style student desk" project on my site...it shows a cutting diagram about how this works. One thing...this method works best when the grain is plainer/straighter than when highly figured as there still is some wood loss from the kerfs. The more "action", the harder it is to disguise the kerfs. If I were doing it today, I'd use my band saw to do the rips with feather boards and a thin blade to minimize this. A quick pass on the jointer with a very light 1/32" cut would clean the edge for glue-up.
