Here is a chest I just finished made from red oak. Was rather a simple
project and fun, but I used a new dye stain that I will never use again.
It is TransTint dye which can use either alcohol OR water, that should
have been my first clue. I really had to keep working fast because it would
dry on me and I had a hard time getting it into the pores of the oak.

The corner joints on the chest are held with 3 brass pins per corner.
The sliding tray inside is purpleheart and maple with a lap joint also held
together with walnut Miller dowels. It rides on waxed maple runners.
Mortised into the purpleheart are two brass handles. On the lid for
strength and to help hold it flat are two pieces of cocobolo. It looked
good before I stained the oak but not a good contrast afterwards.
I finished it with Pre-Cat lacquer. It also has two easy down arms for
the lid.

Dave, I know that computer monitors don’t always reflect reality, but the finish (and craftsmanship) look great on mine!

The chest construction and finish look great from what I can see. The purpleheart is an unusual selection for the drawer, but that is just my preference in materials.

Wow Dave, that is really nice, I'm not used to saying this to another guy, but "Nice Chest!" :D

Is that for your house, or is someone else getting it, I'm sure it will be come a family heirloom for sure, wow, that is nice!

Dave, great work, simple yet has some high-end joinery and very pleasing wood combination.

Can you share which color of the TransTint dye did you use? what did you use to seal and top-coat?

Ya Dave I can see how your dissatisfied with how it came out....I think if I were you I'd pack that thing up and send it to my waste disposal site, I'll take care of it for ya....... :D

Looks pretty nice from here Dave, interesting choice of woods and nice contrast.

Wife says it's very pretty, but she'd like a top on the tray, so could ya whip one of them up before ya send it to us?

Hope ya know I'm teasing...

Welcome! The finish looks nice from here. Are you going to stick with oils next time? I'm still experimenting.

The drawer is especially interesting, how did you decide to do that? I've seen ads for the Miller dowel technique but haven't seen anyone use it. What do you think of it?
