Here is a chest I just finished made from red oak. Was rather a simple
project and fun, but I used a new dye stain that I will never use again.
It is TransTint dye which can use either alcohol OR water, that should
have been my first clue. I really had to keep working fast because it would
dry on me and I had a hard time getting it into the pores of the oak.
The corner joints on the chest are held with 3 brass pins per corner.
The sliding tray inside is purpleheart and maple with a lap joint also held
together with walnut Miller dowels. It rides on waxed maple runners.
Mortised into the purpleheart are two brass handles. On the lid for
strength and to help hold it flat are two pieces of cocobolo. It looked
good before I stained the oak but not a good contrast afterwards.
I finished it with Pre-Cat lacquer. It also has two easy down arms for
the lid.
