Had such nice results from the stuff Ernie sent me that I couldn't resist this chunk of 8/4 pecan at the hardwood store...these are the first two bowls, from opposite ends of the 10' plank:
First one is 7-3/4", centered around the figure that cought my eye in the first place:

Second one is 8-1/2"x1-3/4". My mom's been hinting for a mid-sized fruit bowl, so this one may be headed to Texas.:p

Nice bowls Lee. Man I just don't know how you get that ca finish on those bowls. Hard enough to do a pen let alone a whole bowl! Great job.

Lee.........You are turning up a storm and with great results, I might add! Another DeRaud! For someone who's only been turning a few months, your turning skills are incredible!

Man I just don't know how you get that ca finish on those bowls. Hard enough to do a pen let alone a whole bowl!Bit of a pucker factor the first time, I'll admit. :p
Now I know (1) where to position the fan to keep the fumes out of my eyes and (2) what not to do if the paper towel starts sticking to the glove. Except for that, it's no different from any other lathe-applied finish, just a whole lot faster.
I've never done pens, but I suspect it may be trickier on something that small.
