Hello everyone,
Been hanging around for quite a while and from what i've read I'm sure someone at the Creek can help. I'm looking for a saw hammer to take the kinks out of my hand saw blades and straighten them. Im looking for something similar to the ones Armstrong Tool used to make. I'm also wondering about the proper weight for such a hammer and if I can use a piece of hardwood as an anvil or do I absolutely need an anvil or metal base of some sort. I've included a picture of the Armstrong hammer.

Not the best technique I am sure but: I use an old screwdriver and a light ball pien hammer laying the saw flat on any old piece of pine I have handy.

Granted I don't re-set any $200.00 saws this way but then I don't have any.

Hi Marc,

I just use autobody-type hammers on a chunk of a hardwood, on the end grain. I've never liked using an anvil for it.

If the kinks are bad, you may not be able to remove them and instead stretch the steel or worse, crack the saw plate. If they are near the toe, consider making a shorter panel saw out of them instead.

Take care, Mike
