Heres a pic of the end of the head stock I have on my lathe.

The first is a pic of the lathe the second is the "rod" the pulley is on.

What do I need to get to attach to this so I can start turning?

I hope this doesnt sound too stupid a question.:o

Julio, is that a 5/8" diameter shaft? If so, you can use a Shopmith drive center, or an adapter like this one http://www.pennstateind.com/store/l5818.html to convert to a 1" x 8 TPI thread, which is standard for many chucks and faceplates.

Thanks Kent.

Once I have the adapter what do I use to start turning pen blanks and small, small bowls?

Here's a pen mandrel that will fit on a 1" by 8 TPI thread: http://www.pennstateind.com/store/pkm-bl.html
They also have another version (PKM-CL) that would go directly on a 5/8" shaft. The mandrel comes with 7mm bushings for slimline pens, which are probably the easiest to start with. Other pen types will require additional bushing sets. You'll need a gouge and a skew, face shield, and a drill press or jig for boring the blanks. Penn State offers a free DVD that will take you through the process.

For bowls, the first thing you need is Bill Grumbine's video. I don't have a chuck yet, so I'll leave it to others to make specific recommendations.

Julio, "IF" it is a Shopsmith size spindle you might consider this http://www.pennstateind.com/store/pkstart1c.html This kit plus the free DVD will have you off and running.

Forgot to add, you will need a 60 degree live center also. :(
