I used a 1/3 combination Blo, naphtha, poly mixture. This bowl had a combination of hard & soft wood & even with the bottom being somewhere around 3/16 to 1/4 thick you could hold it up & see a real fine opening in the grain that lets light through. I didn't sand beyond 320 grit it wouldn't have served any purpose because of the alternating soft & hard grain. It seemed to remove soft grain & leave the hard grain.

Looks good Bart, What kind of wood is it? I'd like to see a profile of it.

The wood is spalted alder. I can't give you a profile pic because I gave the bowl away. It is a very shallow bowl just over 7" across.
