As I have not done any segmented work for awhile (since Travis got me into green wood) I decided I needed to do one. This one is maple and walnut. The vessel is 5-1/2" dia. x 6-1/4" tall and contains 210 pieces. The lid and finial are 4-5/8" tall. As always I appreciate your honest feedback and comments. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful!........As we have come to expect from one of those Southern Boy turners! How do you turn that finial? Do you start out between centers...then finish turn in a chuck and cut off?

Geez Keith - I thought you'd been cured of this disease:D

Keith,
Beautiful work!!!

How do you avoid catches in the openings? Do you just turn up the speed or take very light cuts (or maybe both)?

TIA,
Dick

Keith I like this piece a lot my question is how do you glue your segments together with the voids in the midst. Very nice job.

I've been wondering when you were gonna get back to your
signature work! It is fantastic! Works with or without the Finial.
Great job Keith!

Thanks for your comments guys!

Ken, the finial is turned with the chuck only with pin jaws for added support. Starts out with a block about 1" square and turn from the unsupprted end and work back toward the chuck.

Dick, you are correct. Use high speed and light cuts. I also us a Hamlett Little Brother which has a shielded ring cutter. Helps avoid catches.

Tom, if you are interested William Smith has a book on doing these. They are actually easy to do once you get it in your head how they are done. It's all in the planning.
