Painting balustrades

I've been asked to consider repainting the balustrades on a staircase. Original finish is white builder's grade oil based paint, about 10 years old. I will have to paint in place and don't have spray capability. I'll use an oil based gloss finish.

So, how to proceed?

Brush type?

Scuff sand, thin the paint a tad to get good flow and hide brush marks?

Use the paint right out of the can?

Any suggestions are welcome.
