Well heres a bowl I turned from a piece I just got from my haul *see "wood Gloat" started by me* and well yeah couldnt keep my hands off of it. it has the pith in it so donno how it will hold up, also I think I'm gonna rechuck it cause there are some finishing mistakes that I want to fix. Well its just about 5 in tall and at the widest part of the bark just about 7 in. bottom foot is 1 5/8. What do you think?? this is my first time doing this type of NE so what can I do next time with the bark to make it better??

BTW if you click on the image it gets bigger in a new window just so ya know :D I decided that with all the big images right away it was hard to see the piece but like this you can see the WHOLE piece at one time and then zoom in on the images separatly :D:o

Ben that is a beauty. I like the form and finish. I don't know if it is right or wrong but when I do a piece that has the pith in it I soak the pith both inside and outside with CA glue before finishing. Have do 6 so far and none have cracked. I think it was Ellis Hein that told me that. You did a nice job the NE Ben.

Nice looking work, Ben. One doesn't normally see bowls done endgrain, but man, you nailed it!

Good job, Ben! :) Kinda' gutsy leaving the pith there like that. :D I'll be interested to see what, if any, changes happen with that piece. Keep us posted. :)

Thanks all

Heres a pic of what happened as it dried. :o:mad::( Theres room so I may do a friction chuck (if thats what theyre called) and clean it up.

Ben you have to learn the DNA method, it will help these problems from occuring....Look in the articles section for Dennis's write up.

OK, I read the article, but where do you get "alki" or a DNA bath??? does the wood crack at all during this process and does it affect the bark on NE bowls??

hardware store..ace or true value are generally cheaper.

Some cracks but minor ones you turn away. Nope it doesnt effect the bark

Well before I cleaned it up the crack got a lot bigger and spread across the whole bottom. I actually think it looks better now :D What do you guys think??

I think I like it better now, good save. The contrast of the heartwood/sapwood/bark is outstanding. You improved the shape in my opinion.
So what's next ?:D
