Last piece of that dark thick-barked Hickory I picked up a while back. This bowl is 8" wide and 6-1/2" tall w/ 1/4" walls. It's sanded thru 600 and one coat of gel poly applied, then buffed.

This is some of the nicest bark I've seen on any wood.

Very nice. Mark. That's either some mighty tough bark, or very skilled turning work. Or both. ;)

Vaughn,

That is some MIGHTY tough bark.....:D

Ed,

I've got wood from two different Hickory trees. This one is soft as butter, both green and dry. The other one is hard as a rock, both green and dry. I've told about this tree before, but it was pushed over by a bulldozer about 25 years ago but continued to grow. It grew about 6 feet parallel to the ground and then did a 90 and turned straight up. The trunk that grew parallel to the ground is where this bowl came from. It has excessively dark and thick bark and the wood was very soft. The chances of finding another tree like this around here are slim to none.

Thanks all!

Excellent, MarkfromArk. The thickness looks thinner than a 1/4" but the piece looks great!:D

Mark that is a beauty. It sure does look thinner than 1/4". I just got some nice wood to try a HF. Hope it turns out as nice as yours.
