I've been making simple bowls that LOML fills with cookies to welcome new neighbors. She would like for me to make a platter instead as it would be easier to fill with cookies. She is thinking of something like the size of a dinner plate. The only convenient wood I can think of is to use 8/4 lumber, however, it is not always readily available in 9" - 12" widths.

Has anyone ever glued 2 pieces of 8/4 lumber together to make a single platter? How does the glue line look? Do you have any other ideas for easy to obtain wood for turning a simple platter? For that matter, do you have any good housewarming ideas?

how about using different woods and making a segmented plate. I would think that wouldn't be to hard to do just cut some wedges and glue em up.

A glue block and 3/4" or 1" boards works great.

I'll third it; and that makes it unambiguously universally unanimous.

And I'll second Don's suggestion of different species. Think like an Oreo.

And, hey! If it's for cookies and you're in Texas, it's gonna have to be bigger than a dinner plate. Waaaay bigger.

Hey Guys I'm no segmented turner!
I was talking about taking a glue block and attaching it to a 3/4 or 1" thick board to make a platter from solid stock.
Now I can do that if you guys want? I can drop by woodcraft and pick up a nice piece of wood and take a few pics as I turn it.
Now if you want multiple woods you might have to wait a while for that my jointer needs new blades.
let me know and I might be able to get to it this weekend!

Hey I got a good idea!
Since my jointer is down Maybe Andy could glue me something up and send it to me? That would make a great tutorial piece Andy send it my way and we will have a combo tutorial effort!;)

I got a better idea.

It's a challenge.

Let's see who can git-r-done first, Ketron.

And I won't use my jointer, just so we're even

I have an even better idea Andy!
You go ahead and do the tutorial on any style you want for these guys.
When I get the time to get some dry wood ( I use green wood always) and be able to do the glue up and turn it we will set a date and have a showdown?
