This is the finished hollow form I turned for the collar tutorial. Finished with Minwax Antique oil to bring out the figuring, then buffed. 7" diameter by 4 3/4" tall.

Another gorgeous piece, Travis. It must have been fun watching that burl come alive when you first put the oil on it. That's some seriously awesome wood, and you did a masterful job on it. (And thanks again for the collar tutorial.)

Looks good to me... but the collar needs a little work... some guy just posted a tutorial on how to do collars - you might check with him...

:D

Hey, it looks great! That is a super piece of wood. No need to comment on form, etc.

Love that finish, too!

Travis,
Nice work. Are you sure that is Myrtle? I have turned a lot of it, and have never seen it in that color range. Mostly it is greenish, with browns, greys, blacks, yellows, and even some red, but I have never seen it that orange. It looks more like Big Leaf Maple to me.

That is just beautiful! Nice work Travis. Per your comment to Reed... what is the smell the wood makes..good or bad?

There are two distinct smells. When it is fresh, and not starting to deteriorate, it smells (to me at least) kind of sweet and spicy, almost like a honey bar b que sauce. When it is starting to rot, and sometimes just because, it smells like a horse stall (urine). The leaves do smell like the bay leaves that you cook with and the local Indials would used it to make a tea out of. By the way, it is really a California Bay Laurel, and not a true Myrtle. I guess that it is distantly related to the myrtle that grows in the Holy Lands, which is more of a shrub. When visiting California, they call it a bay tree, or a pepper tree. I do love the colors in it, and it does glow when sanded and finished. It does tend to dull the tools quickly, and I believe this to be because the best stuff comes from the coast, and it siphons up a lot of silica particals. As I have said before, I have never seen it that color, which is a typical color of BLM.
