I'm installing new hand rails on my stairs which I purchased at the local borg.
(The type you just attach to the wall.)
After sanding I put on one coat of shellac as a sealer, then a red mahogany stain. I really like the color but I'm not sure where to go from here. I'd love to put on a few coats of varnish but I don't think it would stand up to all the use this railing will be living with. Is my only real option polyurethane?
And if so, how many coats? It's been quite a while since I used it.
Thanks -

Ployurethane is the default finish, if only for durability. Once oily hands start grabing it, it's down hill fast. 3 coats and maybe a semi gloss to kill the plastic look.
