Well I got back from Bill's 5 Barns BBQ in one piece. It was a great day and I got to talk to so many of my friends from WoodCentral and SMC. The food was fantastic as were the people attending!

I got some sharpening tips from Ellis Wallentine and Alan Turner (and hopefully will be able to try them out before I forget all I've learned), hung out with Ron Sardo and Steve Antonucci, finally managed to meet up with my friend Ruth Niles, and spoke to many of you I haven't seen in a long time.

Here are some of the photos I took:

Looks like a good time was had by all. By the way...Is it me or is Bill's turning muscle shrinking? Looks good.

The "Big" attraction at Five Barns this year was obviously Tyler...a really great guy in every way. His lovely daughter, who is currently studying in Philadelphia was every bit as warm as the "old man", too...

And just so you can see how upstanding Tyler is, here's a picture of him with Mr. Grumbine and "the bowl" that Bill has just finished coring...

Oh, and just to keep things honest and in perspective...

43366

In this shot, Tyler holds court with a few folks...the pony tail in the front left is Tyler's DD (dear daughter)

43367

Bill got a bit of turning in, working with a very nice hunk of black walnut that he also cored for demonstration

Speaking of daughters, Alesya gives Robert Tarr a few pointers on using hand planes during the picnic break (and it should be noted that Robert was a big winner in the hand plane contest...congrats!) as Nastia gets ready to record another documentary comment for the video camera. (That I was also shooting these stills with)

So Dominic and Jim.... Did perchance a sharp pointy tool thingie; a fast and spinable thongalating latherizer; and Mr. Howell ever get into concurrent proximity to one another? That's the pic I'm waiting for with baited albeit odiferous breath.

Jim...................Normally when someone post photos of a Creeker gathering I post that I'm Green with envy. In this case.........I'm laughing so hard I can't get my breath and I've turned blue! I am seriously envious!

Uh-oh Dominick...looks like your picture hosting bandwidth was exceeded. Your pics were too popular. :( I'll check back later and see if they're available.. Still, sounds like it was a great time, and I wish I could've been there myself.

Thanks for the pics Dominic and Jim. Hopefully we'll get some more from others that were there also.

I knew immediately there was something wrong with that first pic you posted Jim. My memory is short, but I do remember April 2006 and there's no way Bill could have shrunk, or Tyler grown that much in that short a time. ;) :D

One of these years I'll make it to the 5 Barns, until then I'll have to settle for pics of the event.

Thanks guys.

Dom and Jim, thanks for posting the pictures. I have a few of my own I will get getting up shortly. A great time was had by all, and we hardly had any cleanup to do at all people were so neat and helpful. We're already looking forward to next year!

It was an absolutely wonderful time and I was glad I made the drive down. Absolutely no question that finally meeting Tyler in person was the high point of the weekend for me. Tyler should be proud that he has raised as beautiful, poised, and very intelligent daughter.

Creekers in attendance as best I can remember were: Tyler Howell, Jim Becker and family, Lee Shreier, Jim and Mida Delaney, Alan Turner, Robert Tarr, Domenic Greco, and all of a suden my mind is going blank and forgetting a bunch of others. My apologies.

I am so very glad that Susan and I traveled to Bill & Lisa's place for the big event. It was a pleasure to meet so many people in person whom I had previously known only "online." In the picture Jim posted of Bill turning the bowl from black walnut, that's my backside to the right as I was busy turning a bowl on Bill's Vega--truly a pleasure to use! I was warned that it would spoil me. It did. Here are a couple of my humble attempts at bowl turning. Don't laugh too loud--they're full of mistakes but the good news is the mistakes were valuable lessons, learned with the help of some very gracious and very gifted (and patient) persons!

But the very best thing that happened, by far, was seeing my wife make her entry into the world of turning!!! One of the gentlemen present took a lot of time and guided Susan through creating a spinning top, and she loved the experience! I am so very thankful to see this happen. There was no better time than now to get her introduced to turning, since we were surrounded by such a wealth of knowledge and experience and I myself know so very very little.

A funny story: When we were ready to leave, I told Bill I wanted to purchase his first DVD (second one isn't ready but will be soon). I had my wallet out, ready to pay, and Susan had to stop me. The reason: she had already bought it for my birthday in a couple of weeks, hoping to surprise me. She was so busted! With that, I had a great laugh, said good bye, and thanked my sweet wife (who said I still can't have it until my birthday!).

As "icing on the cake", we were able to spend some fun time with my MIL before returning home. I couldn't have asked for a better weekend!

I can answer that one Loyd. Being in one of the original colonies of the good old USA I thought it only fitting that one of the Abysserators and the Abysserated wear the Scarlet Letter:D

You did an awesome job, Mark! Glad to see that walnut bowl came out. Looks great! Eat any ice cream out of that NE yet? :) :)

Susan was very enthusiastic. I was about to hand her the spindle gouge when Andy got into a teaching groove and could not be dissuaded. ;) I'm glad she got to make a couple of tops. I was very amused when she complained about me taking "her" lathe with me when I left!

I was happy to offer both what I've learned and the wood I brought. I stand on the shoulders of great teachers, and it's only right to pass it on :)

Quoting here from the SMC TOS, Chapter 4, Article 17, paragraph 8:
“Any Creeker who assumes the post Of Pic Police will be held to a higher standard than others, and will be expected to post pics of any Creeker meeting, gloat, or woodworking presentation before the event occurs. (italics mine.)

Sorry about the photos not showing up. Seems they were so poular that we overloaded the free pic hosting site. I never had that happen before!

Thanks, Joe. You did an awesome job at teaching. Susan and I both were fortunate to meet you. I appreciated your asking pointed questions and helping me to think through the process. Yes, you stand on the sholders of great teachers, but you are clearly becoming one in your own right. That's a great gift.

No ice cream from the NE bowl. Maybe some M&Ms though....:D

....and some great starter blanks from Dominic

Tyler,
It was great meeting up with you. I hope you have fun with those blanks. Remember what I said about the Osage Orange. It's hard as a rock! The way to handle it is with sharp tools taking little bites.

See ya around,
