I am building a shelf to go in an alcove. It will be 77 inches long by 12 inches deep with a 3 inch apron on the front. It will be supported by brackets on each side and all along the back of the alcove. I will be putting a veneer on the surface and apron to match another table in the room.

I am looking for suggestions on what to use as the substrate for the shelf. I am considering 1 inch MDF but another WWing friend suggested 3/4 birch plywood. What do you suggest?

Also, this is my first veneering project. I do not have access to a vacuum press so will be doing it manually. Any suggestions regarding adhesive and prep would be appreciated.

Thanks -- Kevin

The knock on MDF for shelves is that it sags, and that the sag gets worse with time. You do have lot of support, with the hardwood front edge and the brackets on the back, so maybe you'll be okay. But why work with that nasty stuff? I'd use plywood or solid lumber for the substrate.

I'm with Jamie. First off MDF is structurally weak. Secondly, it dulls saw blades and emits semi-toxic dust. Thirdly, in case you can't tell, I don't like it.

A nice birch or oak ply would be my choice.:)
