I want to build a small desk type box for the surgeon who performed LOML's cancer surgery back in March. I've searched diligently everywhere I can think of for a really nice example of a classy box and haven't found the right one yet.

If any of you have built a box that fits this description .. I would sure appreciate it if you could email a pic to me .... I've just bought a BEAUTIFUL 14x14x10/4 piece of claro walnut from cawoodnut on Ebay that is destined for this project.

Thanks for your help!!!

Ken,
I made some very simple keepsake boxes from Red Oak and Ash. Each featured 3/16" thick Claro Walnut splines. They were exceptionally easy to make and were well received by my Dad and Father-in-law.

The jig to cut the splines came from the book, "Woodworking with the Router" by Bill Hylton and Fred Matlack. (I've attached pictures of the jig to this post). The slot for the splines was cut using the jig on a router table with a 3/16" straight bit.

The actual inspiration for the design of the boxes came from the book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1561581232/ref=bxgy_sr_text_a/104-3320652-4727907">"Box Making Basics"</a> by David M. Freedman. Published by Taunton Press, this book contains a series of box making projects, and construction tips that were truly informative. I highly recommend this book it for this type of project.

Good luck with your project

Ken, I have made a few boxes.................OK, a LOT of boxes, most of which are posted here in various post's. ;) Maybe a search would dig them out? One design I like is the Heirloom Box, a Wood Magazine Design. It makes a very nice box design, and it is easily customized to fit various tastes. If you would like to see the photo's of some of my Box Designs, I would be happy to email the photo's to you. Just PM me here at the Creek, and I will send them to you. Small Boxes are fun little projects.................I need to build a few more, once I get this "Lathe Fever" under control! :D

'Never happen. Your brain is already plotting about your new, larger "it slices, it dices" lathe...
