This is a hollow lidded box, the box is Apricot and the lid/finial is Chechen Rosewood. There was a guy at the Utah Arts Festival that did these kind of boxes that were amazing so I had to give one a try. Mine isn't even close to as neat as his were. He was from Virginia but I can't remember his name or find his card. Some of you Virginians might know him, he might even be a Creeker.

The tip of the finial/lid was supposed to have a small pointed spade type thing but I botched it and ended up with a cup. The box is 5.5" x 3" the lid is 5" tall. The apricot has some bark inclusions and drying cracks and some pinkish colored wood in it.

Does the name Mark St Ledger ring a bell? White haired school teacher does all kinds of lovey pieces, including boxes.

Curt, that is an absolutely beautiful piece. I can see that resting beside a small tiffany table lamp on a nineteenth century french provincial mahogany end table.

Thanks everyone for the nice compliments.

I was able to find the name of the turner that inspired this. It's John M. Russell from Linden Virginia.
