The hole on top seemed a lil' big so I made a lid for it instead of a collar and turned it into a box. It's Maple with a Walnut lid, 6"W x 5 3/4"H, finished with Rocklers Gel Poly. Always looking for honest critiques as I feel they help me learn and improve my turning.

Joe,
That is a real beauty you've got there. I like the way you left the bark intact in a small region that adds lots of interest.

It is hard to find anything wrong with your piece. The only thing that might make a small improvement is the choice of wood for the lid. You might want to make a lid that is closer to the tones at the edge of the bark. Something more in the orange tones like cherry might look better IMHO.

Take care,
Dick

Joe,
That's a beauty indeed. I like it! You asked for critiques, and far be it from me to critique your fine turning skills, but the only thing I might have done differently would have been to take a touch-up spray gun and tint some lacquer (or shellac if preferred) with dark walnut aniline dye, then spray around the opening so as to create a transition. But that of course is a finish critique not a turning critique, and it's solely out of personal taste. Great job!!!

Joe, you've done yourself proud with this one. Great form and I like the lid which flows with the hf form. Great job :) :)

That is an exceptional looking piece Joe. Now if we can just get you to scale them down to box sized everything will be okay..... ;) :D

Joe,

I have always liked the combination of maple and walnut and the shape is really nice. My only comment is that since your box doesn't have a flat bottom it needs a stand. Fire up your lathe again and turn a small diameter ring with some legs...or maybe something shaped like a saxaphone stand.

An interesting stand would really bring the best out of the shape of your box.

Nice work Joe.

Thanks all.

There is a bottom on this....a lil' over 1" round.....

I may try that, Keith....a stand...hmmmmmm :D

Dick, I thought about using Cherry for the lid but wanted a little contrast....the Maple seemed a little plain (no curl or anything) and wanted to dress it up. I may turn one and see how it looks. :)

I think I'm getting the hang of the hollower, made a few curved boring bars and going to try em out hopefully this weekend if it cools off.
