At first look (Pic 1) hackberry looks kind of plain straight grain blassay type wood but then when you plain it (Pic 2) , you start to see potential. Then you wipe on a coat of Minwax Red Oak stain (Pic3)and a joyess wonder jumps out at you and screams "See I am a beautiful wood!!"
I couldn't believe how the grain just bursted out after stained. I tried some other stains on scrap pieces. The red oak and provential and golden peacan popped the grain the most (my opinion). Grab a board or two of hackberry, I think you'll be pleased.
