I got this wood from Jim Ketron back in April. I just got around to turning it and found some great color and curl inside. This pic show some of the curl, but not much of the color. The collar is Walnut.

The piece is 6-1/2" tall and 9-1/2" wide. The wall thickness is ~1/8"... very lightweight for the size.

I used a gel poly finish on it (three coats) and buffed.

Feedback, critiques, suggestions, and opinions welcome!

Very pretty, Mark. There's some really nice figure, and the collar sets it off very nicely.

I like it, Mark. I wonder how it would look if the collar was a skoshe shorter.

Well, I don't know what the heck a "skoshe" is... but I have not permanently attached the collar as of yet. I'm still not 100% sure about it. I tried black and it just didn't work for me. I'm going to try something in more of a red color and see how it looks before I decide. When I do, I'll try to make it a skoshe shorter and see...;)

Looking gooooood, Mark. Love the wood but must say the collar does not give it the ooooomph I think this piece deserves. Maybe some bloodwood or chakte kok, wenge or even ebony. Walnut is a little bland here and you have to remember walnut usually gets lighter with age, not darker. Still a very nice peice.

Did you take those pictures without the benefit of the Keith Burns tutorial?:p

By the way "skoshe" is Yankee for smidgeon.....

Like I said, the collar isn't permanently attached yet. I like it right now, but am waiting to try a few other pieces first. I tried ebony, but the black didn't work for me. Bloodwood might, but I have to make a road trip to pick some up.

"Smidgeon" I understand... thanks for the translation...:D

Mark, for whatever reason, it just seems I've never been able to see a single one of your pieces, which I didn't like!!! :) And this one is no exception! Great HF, my friend!!! :)

Well, based on feedback and suggestions I turned another collar for this one. Black didn't look right, so I picked up some Padauk and came up with this. It's the one I settled on. Let me know what you think.

Thanks to all for the suggestions (especially Travis who helped me out on this quite a bit).

Mark looks like the Padauk makes the figure in that BE really stand out color matches real well.

I agree!
I used some bloodwood before on a few of mine, it really complements the reds in the wood.
