Here are a few pics of my latest project. I just got it done today, and will probably put another coat or two of finish or some wax on it, but for the most part it is done.

It is a Spice Box that I made using three different plans and designs. I took what I like from each, and made my own interpretation of it. All dovetails are handcut, and so are the mortise and tennons for the raised panels.

It is made out of cherry as the primary wood. Used poplar as the secondary wood (only for drawer parts. All the cherry except the raised panel and the top molding I reclaimed and milled in to lumber from a tree that was cut down to build a house. I milled it on my grizzly bandsaw and dried the cherry for a year+.

It has one hidden drawer, but i cant divulge where it is. :D

Let me know what you think. I am still new, but learning a ton.

Very nice, and the dovetails are very nicely done.

Which three plans did you use, I'm working a plan together at the moment.

The only ltem I might have changed would have the grain on the door vertical instead of across the width. But very pretty none the less.

Congrats, and hopefully with the next year you'll see a photo of my attempt. Oh, my dovetails will be machine cut, I'm not that brave yet.

That is really beautiful!!!!

The contrasting dovetail work is outstanding. It adds so much to the project.

The two main plans I used were;

Glen Huey article in Popular woodworking, July 2003.
D. Douglas Mooberry, Fine Woodworking May/June 1997.
Also took some inspiration from a Spice Box in Andy Rae's Illustrated guide to Furniture and Cabinet constructions. Just pics here, no article.

As for the raised panel door. I wanted to make the grain run vertically also, but the piece of wood was just big enough to fit horizontally, and not big enough to go vertically. It looks like a square, but it is about an inch wider.

Andy,
Great job!! It glows!! I really appreciate the fact that you salvaged and processed the wood for this project. Makes it all that much more special.

John,

I used Tried and True Original wood finish. It is a mix of Boiled Linseed Oil and Beeswax. It is very thick, and I heat it to melt the wax and make it a bit easier to apply. It only has one coat so far, and I may leave it at that. I am not sure what additional coats would do to it.

Only bad part about this finish is a lot of rubbing.....good arm workout.

Nice job ... I'm a big fan of these types of boxes and am just putting the finish on mine now.

I would be interested to know how you made the bracket feet.

nice spice box, they are quite time consuming to build. did you build into it any secret compartments ?

best wishes

Brian,

I made the bracket feet by cutting a cove on my tablesaw, then cut the top corner off, then handplane and file and sand to final shape. Then cut the 45deg miter and then bandsaw out the shape and sand out the bandsaw marks. Glue them up and your ready to go.

Lou,

Yes, there is a secret hidden drawer. Care to guess where?

Wow! that is a very beautiful spice box. Tip of the hat for the hand cut doetail, they look very nice. The color is also great.

I love what you have done in terms of moldings and feet, they complete each other very well. The drawers arrangement is equally well tought of.

As for the secret compartment, I'd have to see the back to venture a guess. ;)
