I've been holding onto this slab of Maple burl for some time, since it was a little too big for my PM's swing. I finally got around to building an outboard stand a couple weeks ago.
I ended up losing about an inch off one edge, so I was able to finish the bottom inboard with the vacuum chuck. 20" at the widest point and 2 1/2" deep. Finished with a mixture of BLO and Honey Amber dye, then a couple coats of Antique oil after the BLO cured.

Well, that does it. I'm gonna sell my lathe and all my tools and all my turning stock. First person with a check or cash in the amount of $1 million can have it all.....

Sheesh, Travis, bad enough that I have an old worn out deck and you have a new one, now you have to go and turn that beauty. You sure know how to hurt a guy. Just beautiful!!!:D

That's truely awesome, Travis! How you did it without it breaking apart into million pieces is beyond me! :) Add to that, your unending talents with tool fixturing makes me green with envy! :o Great job all the way around! :)

Absolutely awesome. Great piece of wood, but even better job of turning. Love the form, color, and in/out of natural edge.

Ditto what everyone has said, and a question about your outboard stand, how did it work?

Cheers!

Stu, it worked great. Only has a small amount of vibration in the up post that I need to take care of. ;)

Travis, I may have to get stitches in my chin from having my jaw drop so hard on the keyboard. That's an amazing piece. I'd be scared half to death touching a chisel to that hunk o' wood as is spins. It just looks like an explosion waiting to happen. It's amazing what skilled hands can do with a piece like that. You did a great job with it.

BTW, looking at the picture of your outboard stand, it appears that you haven't been paying the cleaning lady quite enough money. :p

Does the check have to be good?

Really nice piece Travis.

What Shelly and everyone else said! If the wood was much DARKER, we might talk. That is one of the ideas I had for that commission.

Fantastic!

Wow Travis, that's really beautiful. I like your stand. Is there a leveling foot of some sort to tighten it against the concrete?

Hi Travis,

First, let me say that the platter is fantastic! That is one memorable piece. Second, I am impressed with your ingineuity with the outboard turning stand. When I got my 3520a I also bought their outboard turning stand. While it is very well made, at about 250 lbs, it is not easy to move around. Your solution is elegant!

Travis......that has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of wood I've seen and it was definitely in the hands of the right person to do it justice! That thing is definitely gallery worthy! Fantastic!

That's just a fantastic turning from what looks like a VERY challenging piece of wood. Impressive work, Travis!
