Spalted Apple crotch hollow form with a couple voids. I managed to get the walls about 1/8" thick and smoothed the openings where I turned through the bark. 5 1/2" x 5 1/2", Ebony collar and buffed Watco finish. I loved turning this wood, was able to get a very smooth cut and finish on it.:)

Travis,
That's very cool, looks like an apple itself. Put a stem in there and it would be, maybe a worm crawling out one of the through holes. Reall, I like the form especially for that size.

Travis that is beautiful. Love the apple. Was it green? How do you keep apple from cracking?

Bernie, it was still fairly green, Jim Ketron left it with me. I've had nothing but great success roughing thinner and using the DNA process, especially with fruit woods.

STUNNING, Travis. Amazing what you can do to a piece of wood.

Did you smooth/sand those voids or are they naturally smooth?

Beautiful piece of turning, Travis. But what is the "DNA process"?

Thanks guys.
Barry, the voids are where I cut through the outside bark of the blank. The inside edges were sharp and jagged, I just sanded them smooth.
Horst, the DNA method was pioneered by Dave Smith. You soak a roughed green turning in denatured alcohol and and can finish within just a few weeks, it works great.;)

Nice Job Travis!
Amazing what you did with that piece of wood, and the funny thing is, no one wanted that piece:p you just never know what you will find in a hunk of wood!
